  • “Mentally Ill Teens Vaping”: What’s Really Going On

Earlier this week the “News Medical: Life Science and Medicine” website posted an article about how teenagers with moderate mental health problems who may not have considered smoking conventional cigarettes otherwise are now turning to vaping “electronic cigarettes” instead. This article started off especially excellent because of the middle of that sentence, they acknowledged that while teens may be vaping now they are the likely the exact teens that would have turned to smoking cigarettes otherwise.

Now, many would say that despite that deterrent from smoking, teens vaping is still a serious problem. I would actually whole heartedly agree with them. While there is a lot of evidence pointing towards vaping being harmless, it’s important that the industry becomes regulated before vaporizers are available to those that are under aged. I mostly say this because at this time cheap low grade nicotine juices coming in from China are not regulated and could potentially be harmful. While I am no fan of most of the regulations that have been proposed, that has mostly been because vaporizers have continually been equated to tobacco products. We need good studies on the effects of vaporizers and comprehensive regulations that will help smooth out the industry without putting small businesses out of business. Unfortunately, that may end up being a quite difficult task given the big tobacco lobbies.

That all being said, this article does take a bad turn towards the end and it ends up right where it seems most articles about vaping end. Making wild accusations without scientific support. They, ironically, began by saying that vaping has not become demonized in our society in any way. I think any casual vaper could easily refute this statement though. Have you or any fellow vaper you have known not come across people disgusted by your discreet vaping and asking you to move out by the dumpsters across the street with the “rest of the smokers.” Hell, I’ve even encountered smokers that “don’t trust” vaporizers as they continue to suck in their smoking tar! The article then goes on to quote “Jennifer Unger, study co-author and professor of preventive medicine at Keck Medicine of USC. ‘This study shows that e-cigarettes are attracting a lower-risk group of teens: Those who would not ordinarily be inclined to smoke cigarettes because of the social norms against smoking. E-cigarettes are increasing the risk of disease among this low-risk group.'” This is a very loaded statement made by Jennifer Unger, it is also one thrown out there without evidence to back it up.

While, once again, I agree that it would be best to keep all things bad away from teens it seems time and time again to not be the practical approach. Both Jennifer Unger and I would love to live in a perfect world but we just don’t. While I would never sell any nicotine products to someone underaged I am glad that they are turning away from cigarettes. Every smoker I’ve known started in their teens, if a good number of those could be prevented I would be one happy girl.

  • The Vaping Bandwagon: Take A Look At eLiquid

    E- Liquid Facts

One of the most important components of vaping, aside from the vaporizer pen itself, is, of course, the e-Liquid. Without it vaping would be considered pretty pointless.

Now, as if finding the perfect flavor was not hard enough. You also have to worry about a healthfully produced eLiquid to reduce the many unknown health risks that come along with vaping.

It is commonly known that there have been more and more eLiquid producers that are getting caught with the incorrect and hazardous labeling of their products.

So let’s take a look into what eLiquid is. The use of nicotine, and the ingredients that are incorporated into the eLiquid to give you your favorite flavors.

    What is it?

e-Liquid, also known as e-Juice, is quite obviously the liquid that is used in the act vaporizing. To put it very simply, eLiquid is the fluid that fuels the electronic cigarette.

Consider the relationship of eLiquid and a vape pen to that of gas and a car. It is also what provides the nicotine solution and the preferred flavoring to your electronic cigarette. When the coils of the vape pen heat up the eLiquid it creates the vapor, in which you, in turn, exhale. That mimics the traditional smoke from a traditional tobacco cigarette.

It seems to come up very often that people are increasingly wary about the contents of the e-Liquid.

E-Liquid has been widely known to typically contain vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine and some sort of flavoring.

There are many vapor companies where the vaper can generally custom order e-liquid by requesting a certain VG (vegetable glycerin) percentage and PG (propylene glycol) percentage.

However, as the industry has progressed and grown, many eLiquid manufacturers are distributing e-liquid with a set VG/PG percentage. The most common percentages to see from manufacturers is, 50 VG/50 PG, 65 VG/35 PG, and 70 VG/30 PG.

    “No-Nic”  Vapers

Along with the flavor, vegetable glycerine, and propylene glycol the vaper can also request a certain nicotine strength due to there personal preferences.

However, for those of you that are not huge fans of nicotine. It is not required to be in e-Liquid ingredients in order for it to be vaporized.

There are many users who in fact do not use nicotine, and just enjoy the act of vaporizing on its own. These type of vapers have been nicknamed “No-Nic” vapers.

For those of you that do enjoy your dose of nicotine. The most common nicotine strengths are from 0mg to 24mg. In fact, most electronic cigarette vendors will not even offer more than that amount either.

The most common nicotine strength used is 18mg on the high side and 12mg on the low side. What is most important with the nicotine levels is to find one that suits you.

Something that will not be too harsh but still gives you the head rush most vapers are searching for. As new products continue to emerge and evolve, more advanced electronic cigarettes have enabled vapers to be able to drop their nicotine strengths. Due to the fact that these more advance devices deliver nicotine more efficiently.

Now that you know the basics of eLiquid, get out there and find the perfect eLquid for you!

  • The Vaping Bandwagon: The Ins and Outs Part II

On the last blog post about the ins and outs of vaping we took a look into the makeup of the bottom part of the common Kanger EMOW Vape Pen model. It is easier to understand how to vape and what exactly is happening when you vape when the products you are using are broken down and explained. Today I will be continuing to break down the rest of the vape pen for you so there will be a full and complete understanding of the vape pen. Again, I will let you know that the type of vape pen we are looking at are the basic models for most beginning vapers.

The next part of the pen that I will be informing you of is called the atomizer. The atomizer is a small metal tube casing that typically has a male threading at the bottom to be attached to an electronic cigarette. Found at the top of the atomizer is an opening to allow the use of eLiquid. The eLiquid will drip down to fill the chamber of an atomizer, in order for the eLiquid to be vaporized. A cartomizer, which is much like the atomizer, except for the fact that the metal tubing is a bit longer. Inside the metal tubing of a cartomizer is a filler material, such as organic cotton. This filler material acts as a wicking system. An atomizer or cartomizer is also used inside of tank systems.

One of the most well-known and widely liked features of these types of vape pens is the tank system or also known as a clearomizer. The tank system is being more commonly used today with atomizers for its convenience. It is also designed to hold more eLiquid than many of the outdated atomizers that were once leading the market. The tank system is a tube that is usually made from either a plastic or a Pyrex glass material.  When you are filling the tanks system it is very important to make sure that the eLiquid is only going into the clear part of the tank to ensure the coils will not be ruined.

The last, and quite possibly the most important part of the vape pen is called the drip tip. A drip tip, also known as the mouth piece, is the part that is connected to the top of the atomizer or clearomizer. While vaping at high temperatures the casing of the atomizer or clearomizer is known to sometimes become very hot to the touch. Therefore, the drip tip has been introduced to us and is used so that your lip does not come into direct contact with the heat that is produced from the batteries and coil. For some models the drip tip was also designed so that you could easily drip e-liquid into your atomizer without taking off the mouth piece. This is done by pouring your drops of e-liquid into the center hole of the drip tip. However, this can be a bit risky to perform and is not usually recommended because it has been known to ruin many a vape pen.

  • The Vaping Bandwagon: The Ins and Outs Part I

Even though, in theory, the electronic cigarette is a relatively simple little piece of machinery, there are a plethora of different components that all come together to make up the complete vaporizer. There are numerous different types of electronic cigarettes on the market and even more options for accessories to go along with them. The type of electronic cigarette we are going to be looking at today are going to be vaporizer models that are similar to the Kanger EMOW Vape Pen. These pens are generally a favorite for being used by beginners because of their ease of use and straightforward design. Let’s get to know the ins and outs of your vape pens.

The best way to learn about the ins and outs of vape pens is to start from the bottom up! That being said, I’ll start by explaining the battery or tube part of the vaporizer pen. The tube is the housing to the battery for the electronic cigarette. There are various tubes come in a multitude of shapes and sizes to accommodate certain battery sizes and internal electronics. This part of the device will typically be found at the bottom part of the electronic cigarette. When learning about this part with any different type of vape pen it is important to be conscious of battery safety. The battery is obviously going to be the component of the pen that gives it the power to vaporize the eLiquid.

Working our way up from the tube of the vape pen, we will move onto the next part which is the power button. The power button is what activates the battery, which will then deliver its power to the heating element of the pen known as the ‘atomizer’ or ‘cartomizer’. There are some buttons have multiple use functions for the vape pen. The physical button is referred to as a ‘manual’ electronic cigarette. The other form is known as an ‘automatic’ electronic cigarette and has no button. This type of vaporizer is activated by a sensor that detects when you’re pulling vapor from the device. So in other words, the sensor acts as the button of the eCigarette. Many vapers have shown to tend to lean in favor more towards the manual eCigarette design because an automatic electronic cigarette can be triggered to activate at times when it is not actually in use, which will deplete the battery life and sometimes ruin the battery altogether.

The third and last part of the vape pen that I will be explaining in this post is called the connector. The connector is the part of the vape pen that sits at the top of the electronic cigarette and is used to attach the atomizer to the battery tube. The connector typically will have female threading to make the connection the male threading on the atomizer. The connector can range in various styles such as 510, 801 and 901. The 510 threading is the most common and easy to come across as opposed to the 801 and 901. Making sure you have the same threading connections for you battery tube and atomizer is a key component to properly setting up your vape pen.
